The National Question and Marxist Dialectics: Immature Class Reductionism and Distortions Regarding the State and Nations

Whenever discussions on the national question arise within Sri Lanka's leftist political milieu, they are frequently reduced to a mechanical classism, brushing aside both socio-historical development and Marxist-Leninist dialectics. Recent arguments contend that the national question cannot be resolved in isolation while all other facets of class oppression remain unaltered, that resolving the national question is contingent upon a socialist transformation, and that its demands are merely reformist. Such positions represent a historical distortion, dragging theoretical discourse backward and abandoning the theoretical maturity developed by Lenin and Stalin, as well as the historical practice of the Soviet Union.

Fundamental Contradiction vs. Principal Contradiction: A Critique of the Mechanical View

In Marxist dialectics, grasping the distinction between the "fundamental contradiction" and the "principal contradiction" is essential. In a capitalist social order, the class contradiction between capital and labor is the foundational, enduring contradiction residing at the base of society. However, in a specific historical context and within a concrete terrain of oppression, it is the "principal contradiction" that emerges as the primary driving force determining the movement of society.

In a country like Sri Lanka, characterized by a multi-ethnic society and state-driven chauvinist oppression, the principal contradiction is national oppression. To argue that the national question cannot be addressed until all aspects of class oppression are eradicated is an outright denial of the distinct political dialectic of national oppression. Waiting for "the class structure to transform" without resolving the principal contradiction runs contrary to objective dialectics; worse, it alienates the oppressed nationality from proletarian politics altogether.

State Power, Self-Determination, and the Reformist Argument

Postponing the resolution of the national question until after the victory of socialism is fundamentally incompatible with the Leninist theory of the state and revolution. The national question is, in essence, an issue concerning state power and the structure of an oppressive state apparatus. It represents a democratic demand that must be confronted within the bourgeois-democratic phase itself.

In his 1914 thesis, Lenin defined the matter with absolute clarity: the right of nations to self-determination means nothing other than the right to political secession—the right to establish an independent state. When Rosa Luxemburg and others argued that national demands divide the working class and cannot be resolved under capitalism—insisting they could only be settled under socialism—Lenin vehemently opposed this view. He established that only by unconditionally supporting the right to self-determination and secession could the workers of the oppressed nation and the workers of the oppressor nation be united in a genuine, revolutionary alliance.

To dismiss this right to statehood defined by Lenin, reducing self-determination to mere "regional autonomy" or administrative "devolution of power," and to dismiss national demands as mere "reformism," dilutes Leninism. When figures like the Yugoslav communist Semić and Austrian Marxist Otto Bauer sought to reduce the national question to administrative reform or cultural-national autonomy, Stalin rigorously criticized them. Stalin openly acknowledged that viewing national demands merely as instruments of the bourgeoisie or as minor reformist matters belonged to an earlier, "immature stage" of the Marxist movement, which was later corrected through revolutionary experience. Reviving as dogma today what Marxist pioneers discarded as an immature error represents a severe theoretical retreat.

The Illusion of the "Abstract Masses" and the Reality of Nations

Superficial class-reductionists in Sri Lanka often propose a shortcut: the idea of uniting as a single mass of working people stripped of ethnicity, religion, or community identities.

When Bukharin argued that "self-determination belongs not to nations, but to the working people (the proletariat)," Lenin rejected this formulation, demonstrating that nations are objective socio-historical entities and therefore self-determination belongs to nations. Similarly, Karl Kautsky adopted an opportunist stance by referring to an undifferentiated "mass of people," failing to grasp the historical formation of nations.

Society consists of concrete historical formations: nations, nationalities, nascent national formations, and indigenous peoples. Attempting to forcibly assimilate these distinct entities into an abstract conception of the "masses" is not a Leninist approach; rather, it masks the prevailing structures of chauvinist domination.

The Historical Experience of the Soviet Union: The Formation of Republics

The historical trajectory of the Soviet Union advanced precisely by acknowledging and formalizing the objective reality of distinct nations. Although the Union was established in 1922 with four founding republics—Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Transcaucasia—the Bolsheviks recognized that numerous distinct nations existed within these boundaries.

Consequently, to accommodate national aspirations, separate Soviet socialist republics and autonomous regions were formed for various nationalities, including Uzbeks, Turkmens, Tajiks, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz. Genuine socialist unity was realized only after acknowledging the right of nations to self-determination. Overlooking this historical process and substituting self-determination with administrative decentralization completely distorts the lessons of the Soviet experience.

Accelerating Social Stages and the Development of Productive Forces

According to historical materialism, society develops through distinct historical stages. As Karl Marx emphasized, the existence of classes and the class struggle are bound up with particular historical phases in the development of production; society cannot leap arbitrarily into socialism.

When an oppressed nation (such as the Tamil nation) faces national subjugation, the development of its productive forces is systematically obstructed. Only when such a nation achieves its right to self-determination can it fully develop its productive forces, advance its socio-economic formation, and thereby accelerate the material prerequisites for a socialist transformation.

As long as national oppression persists, the working class of the oppressed nation and that of the oppressor nation cannot unite organically. Accepting the right to self-determination unconditionally is the prerequisite for authentic proletarian class unity. National states will wither away only when the state itself withers away in the higher phase of communism. Until then, attempting to dissolve or assimilate nations forcibly serves only the hegemony of the oppressor nation.

Asserting that the national question must be shelved until socialism arrives, or that social stages can be bypassed through an abstract shortcut of "uniting the masses," contradicts historical materialism. Recognizing the right of oppressed nations to self-determination in the democratic stage, and ensuring the unhindered development of their productive forces, remains the only Leninist path toward genuine proletarian unity and socialist transformation.
